PETS FOR LIFE NYC
HOW TO FIND A GOOD HOME FOR YOUR PET
If you absolutely cannot keep your pet, the Safety Net/Pets for Life NYC Program offers this information flyer with tips on how to find a good home for your pet without surrendering him or her to Animal Care & Control of NYC where there is a risk of euthanasia due to lack of space.
- Pure Breed Rescue Groups (if your pet is a pure breed dog or cat.) Contact Joyce Friedman or Jenny Olsen of the Safety Net/Pets for Life NYC Program at joycelfriedman@hotmail.com or 917-468-0487 or jenlo_213@yahoo.com or 347-301-8094 for assistance in placing your pet with a breed rescue group. There are no guarantees but there is much larger chance of success if the contact is made from our program.
- ASPCA Public Intake – The ASPCA, a “no kill” shelter, at 424 E 92 St between 1st Ave and York Ave. in Manhattan, will accept friendly animals, if they have space, into their shelter for adoption. You must call for an appointment for evaluation of your pet. Call 212-876-7700, x4145 and leave a clear message as instructed. They might take several days to return your call but it will be returned. Once again, you must leave your message at this extension: x4145.
This is a good option to try IF your pet is friendly, not aggressive, and fairly healthy. Your pet is especially more likely to be accepted if he/she is a pure breed dog, a small dog, or a young dog or cat. But older pets can be accepted as well as can mixed breeds; the above are just MORE LIKELY to be accepted. The main requirement is friendliness.
- Call other limited admission (“no-kill”) animal shelters to see if they have space or if they can put you on a waiting list:

It is very important to post a well written, enticing ad AND to include good photos. Contact Joyce or Jenny of the Safety Net/Pets for Life NYC Program (contact info below) for assistance in drafting a good ad and for photo tips.
- Make a flyer with pics of your pet and post it where animal lovers go: pet stores, veterinary offices, and other public place such as your work site, the work site of everyone you know, laundromats, stores, libraries etc. Contact Joyce or Jenny of the Safety Net/Pets for Life NYC Program (contact info below) for assistance in creating a good flyer/ to be sent a flyer sample.
- Make an email posting of your craigslist ad with pics included and email to everyone you know and ask them all to email it to everyone they know including at their jobs. (Emailing one email blast at large corporations can reach thousands of people.) Contact Joyce or Jenny of the Safety Net/Pets for Life NYC Program (contact info below) for assistance in drafting of an email ad.
IMPORTANT: FOR #4, 5, and 6 it is IMPERATIVE you do good screening of the potential adopter.
Contact Joyce or Jenny of the Safety Net/Pets for Life NYC Program (contact info below) to receive Adoption Application and Adoption Agreement forms, and for advice on this matter. This is crucial.
URGENT NOTE: PLEASE SPAY OR NEUTER YOUR PET PRIOR TO PLACEMENT WITH A PRIVATE PERSON to prevent the new adopter from breeding him or her. There are animals put to death daily at city shelters due to the existence of too many animals and not enough homes. Call Safety Net/Pets for Life NYC at 917-468-2938 for free/low cost spay/neuter options. DO NOT ADOPT OUT UNSTERILIZED PETS! (It is also often more likely a rescue group/shelter will accept your pet if he or she is already spayed/neutered)
