Foster Care Program

Tens of thousands of pets come into ACC each year. Often, these pets are too young to be placed in the shelter or have special needs that require a nurturing home environment. Foster parents provide a clean, safe, loving environment for homeless pets and help them prepare to find a new forever home. After receiving foster care, these pets are healthier and happier, which means they are well prepared to be adopted by a loving family. There are many different levels of fostering available. Short-term Foster

Healthy and well-socialized animals typically only need a few days to a week in foster before they are scooped up by an adopter. These animals are invited to attend our weekly mobile adoption events where they usually go home with their new families the same day.

Typical stay: 1-2 weeks

Standard-term Foster

ACC regularly takes in kittens and puppies without mothers, along with animals that have minor illnesses or injuries. Because kittens and puppies need to be at least two pounds before they can be adopted, we need foster homes to help care for them until they are big and strong. Foster parents should be prepared to socialize their puppies and kittens, as well as provide them with the structure and care they need before they transition into their new home.

Animals recovering from illness typically need about 10-14 days of antibiotics, along with rest and relaxation. Fosters should be prepared to monitor their illness to ensure its improving, administer medication as directed, and keep their animal occupied as they get better.

Typical stay: 2-4 weeks

Long-term Foster

Young kittens and puppies, mothers with nursing litters, and animals recovering from injuries often require a longer foster period before they are able to be adopted.

Typical stay: 4-8 weeks

Adoption Ambassador

The Adoption Ambassador program takes fostering to the next level. Participants at this level not only house the animal, but actively pursue the animal's direct adoption. Ambassadors provide our animals with the opportunity to meet with potential adopters within their community, as well as network their foster on social media. Our animals are routinely exposed to new audiences, many of which have never considered adopting from the shelter, or adopting at all!

Adoption Ambassadors are also in the unique position of working with animals that had trouble adjusting to the kennel environment. By committing to their placement, and offering them the chance to live in a home until they are adopted, Ambassadors are able to showcase the best qualities of their animals, increasing the chance of them being adopted!

Typical stay: 3-12 weeks
