A volunteer writes: The best things in life are sometimes found in the smallest of spaces. And the brightest lights will always shine no matter how dark the night. Whatever 2 year-old Fordham may lack in body mass he makes up for in spirit and heart. In an effortless warmth wrapped around his small shoulders like the coat he may never have known. Fordham steals my heart instantly from inside his kennel, shyly padding forward to sniff my outstretched hand. And while he shows some hesitation at the sight of my leash, he eventually allows me to slip the lead about his neck and off for a walk we go. But first we'll need a coat, or perhaps a coat and a sweater, and sweet Fordham happily humors me in fitting him with both. And as I ease his tiny paw through the last puffy sleeve I'm caught in the moment and hug him too close, wondering how I'll ever let go. But Fordham deserves to see the world and the world to see him so I do and off we go. Trotting to the park, me and my tiniest of companions, with Fordham so blissful and happily caught in the moment he misses each sad-eyed stare. Fordham was found as a stray so much of his past is unknown. We can draw our conclusions of course. Write a story for every rib. But to pity Fordham or dwell on his past would be to miss the chance at painting his future. Sitting in the park with Fordham at my side there is no yesterday, or "before," only now and forever. And when I lose myself a second time, hugging him much too close, I let go at the thought of his new life and his new family, and now it's the two of us smiling. The best things in life can be found in the smallest of spaces but there's nothing small about Fordham or his heart. It is the biggest, the bravest, the most open against every odd, and ready to love you forever. Fordham is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.
