Licensed Veterinary Technician - Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island

SUMMARY:
This position is within the medical unit located at our Staten Island facility, assisting in providing services to our animals and in assisting our Veterinarians with the performance of their duties.   

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

    • Examine, vaccinate and triage animals
    • Medicate and treat animals
    • Perform humane euthanasia
    • Assist with surgery
    • Asepsis
    • Computer data entry
    • Aging and sexing of animals
    • Disease recognition and management
    • Breed identification and characteristics
    • Other duties, as assigned and directed by the Veterinarian or Lead Veterinary Technician Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • True love of animals and ability to interact with them in a calm and non-threatening manner
  • Prior veterinary technician experience; Shelter environment is a plus
  • High level of reliability and a commitment to our mission and values

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Basic veterinary technician protocols and procedures
  2. Computers and common programs, such as MS Office

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to work in an animal care facility where humane euthanasia is performed

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTY:
This position does not generally encompass the supervision of others

POSITION: Animal Care Officer                                          LOCATION:  Manhattan Care Center

OPENING DATE:                                                                    CLOSING DATE: Open until filled

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the care and welfare of animals while they are in the care of AC&C, as well as providing customer service.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Keep cages and runs clean and sanitized
Provide food and water for the animals
Be aware of animals who may exhibit signs of illness or injury
Assist with securing of supplies
Answer telephones in a professional manner
Assist customers within scope of duties, including with intakes and adoptions
Prioritize situations, as needed
Perform Due Out Processes, including the generation of appropriate reports, making rounds, evaluating animals for adoptability and updating the computer system
Generate a Pre-Euthanasia Report to New Hope Partners
Perform all adoption paperwork and procedures
Print kennel inventory and account for all animals
Accurately perform Lost and Found Checks and Return to Owner procedures
Monitor, prepare and submit payroll to Center Supervisor for review
Perform Center closing procedures
Secure aggressive animals as needed
Any additional duties at the direction of a supervisor

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduate or GED
True love of animals and ability to interact with them in a calm and non-threatening manner
Demonstrated reliability and a high level of integrity

ABILITY TO:

Professionally interact with the public and to assist them within the scope of duties
Handle a wide variety of cats, dogs and exotic animals
Perform quality work
Deal effectively with volunteers and other employees
Lift heavy loads up to 125 lbs. (animals, food bags, etc.)
Learn shelter computer software programs

WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to odors or airborne particles including animal fur and toxic chemicals.  The noise level in the work environment is very loud.  Frequent driving between facilities is required.  Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds.

SALARY RANGE:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a salary as per Union scale. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, sick time, vacation time, 401K, pension plan and group life insurance. Union membership is required.

Position:  Veterinarian                                            Location:  Manhattan and Staten Island

DEFINITION
Provide leadership and direction for the medical and surgical care of animals in the shelter. Responsible for the day to day health of animals in the shelter.  Triage and stabilize ill and injured animals (including on-call as needed), diagnose and treat a wide variety of medical conditions, anesthetize animals as needed, and perform surgery. Recognition and documentation of animal cruelty, including expert witness testimony. Must be willing to work with a wide variety of species, focusing on cats and dogs. Advise on placement and euthanasia decisions. Work with the medical director to ensure health of the population, oversight and training of medical staff (veterinary technicians and assistants) This position is based within the medical department at a specific AC&C location but flexibility to work at other locations may occasionally be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Disease identification and surveillance, including daily rounds
  • Triage and examination of a variety of species
  • Efficiently stabilize and manage a variety of trauma cases, including vehicular traumas, high-rise traumas, etc
  • Recognize, manage and treat a wide variety of medical conditions, with a particular focus on infectious diseases
  • Direct veterinary technicians and assistants in the daily performance of their duties
  • Oversee controlled substances use and logging with the assistance of the medical clerk (where applicable)
  • Administration and monitoring of anesthesia
  • Performance of routine surgery, focusing on high-volume high-quality spay/neuter
  • Collect appropriate samples and perform and/or request appropriate laboratory tests, including decapitation for rabies testing
  • Interpretation of laboratory data and radiographs
  • Assist in placement and euthanasia decisions
  • Properly record all drug activity, DEA logs, and statistics, as required by law and AC&C policy
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including computer data entry
  • Recognition and documentation of cruelty cases, including preparation of veterinary statements and expert witness testimony
  • Necropsy examinations of deceased animals
  • Work with the medical director to ensure compliance with relevant state law and city code
  • Other duties as assigned by the Medical Director

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree
  • Licensure in NYS to practice veterinary medicine
  • Previous clinical experience, particularly in shelters, preferred but not required
  • Strong surgical and diagnostic skills
  • Interest in and understanding of shelter medicine, epidemiology, and herd health
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, able to multi-task and prioritize
  • Dependable, reliable, and efficient
  • Must have a valid NYS driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, stand for prolonged periods of time, and perform multiple surgeries on a daily basis

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The employee will regularly be exposed to the following: potentially zoonotic
  • diseases (including rabies), aggressive animals, loud noises (e.g. barking
  • dogs), and odors.
  •  
  • Medical and surgical care in a high volume setting is physically and
  • emotionally demanding. Euthanasia is performed in the facility and
  • euthanasia decisions are a specific job task.

OVERTIME: This position is exempt from overtime.

Position:  Veterinary Assistant / Handler                 Location:  Manhattan

DEFINITION

Under the direction of a veterinarian, assist in the provision of basic care for animals in the shelter by providing support to the licensed veterinary technicians and veterinarians.  Administers topical and oral medications, bathes and grooms animals, restrains and helps otherwise facilitate other treatments. This position is based within the medical department at a specific AC&C location but flexibility to work at other locations may occasionally be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Handle and restrain animals as requested by licensed veterinary technicians or veterinarians
  • Medicate orally and/or topically
  • Assist in stocking and maintenance of adequate inventory
  • Assist with humane euthanasia
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including computer data entry
  • Facilitate transfer of animals from intake areas through medical and into appropriate housing
  • Assist in feeding and other basic husbandry care of animals
  • Cleaning of medical areas, kennels and cages as needed
  • Maintain handling and restraint equipment
  • Aging, sexing, and accurate breed identification
  • Other duties as assigned by the lead veterinary technician or veterinarian
QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Minimum 6 months previous experience working with animals in a veterinary or shelter setting
  • High school diploma. Some college preferred but not required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Dependable, reliable, and efficient
  • Must have NYS driver’s license
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and stand for prolonged periods of time
