DEFINITION

The sales person would sell gourmet coffee and tea for an energetic non-profit organization in NYC. AC&C launched a cause-inspiring coffee and tea product in 2010. We are looking for a dedicated sales person to expand our sales.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • The sale of coffee and tea, including but not limited to door-to-door sales, cold-calling potential customers and retailers, sales at events, etc.
  • Keep updated and accurate records of inventory and all sales.
  • Cash management of sales, including cash, credit cards and checks.

Human Resources Associate
DEFINITION

Under limited supervision, provides Human Resource Management support in functional areas of the Human Resources Department which include payroll, recruitment and employment, personnel records, employee relations, regulatory reporting requirements, benefits administration and other areas as needed. The HR Associate will regularly interface with employees, job applicants and senior managers. She/he must consistently demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism and be able to represent Animal Care & Control effectively, maintaining confidentiality as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Administer and maintain biweekly payroll for 100 plus union and non union/exempt and non exempt employees.
  • Support and maintain benefit enrollment for all staff, including union dues and initiation fees, COBRA, FMLA, and compliance with other legal requirements.
  • Systematize and maintain all HR files and databases including EEO profiles and payroll data.
  • Manage recruitment by maintaining and updating staff job descriptions and postings; review resumes, coordinate scheduling and screening candidates, and track the hiring process.
  • Coordinate and process new employees, including employment eligibility verification process (I-9) and implement New Hire Orientation.

Part-Time Quality Control Assistant
DEFINITION

Assist with quality control by monitoring statistics and internal reports. Identify and report on areas of concern. This position is Part Time, 4 -5 hours/day; 7 days per week.

Volunteer Liaison - Brooklyn
DEFINITION

Oversee the scheduling, training, placement, recognition and administration of AC&C's volunteer program in our Care Centers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Train, supervise and retain volunteers for the continuation and growth of the volunteer program.
  • Enforce AC&C's volunteer policies and procedures, rules and regulations and other necessary information.
  • Help maintain proper volunteer files, including applications and database files on all volunteers.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Supervisor for planning, implementation and support, and shelter staff to optimize value of volunteers and the organization.
  • Help with targeting exceptional volunteers for volunteer recognition, appreciation and advancement.
  • Communicate ideas on relevant content for the weekly volunteer newsletters.
  • Provide monthly reports regarding the activities of the program.
  • Monitor safety issues among volunteers and take immediate action to correct hazards, including proper training of volunteers or re-classifying levels of competency to handle animals.

  • Develop and foster supportive working relationship between AC&C staff and volunteers, including resolution of conflicts between the two groups.

  • Bachelor's degree preferred.

  • At least two years of supervisory-level responsibility within an active volunteer program, or related experience.

Veterinarian
DEFINITION

Provide leadership and direction for the medical and surgical care of animals in the shelter. Responsible for the day to day health of animals in the shelter. Triage and stabilize ill and injured animals (including on-call as needed), diagnose and treat a wide variety of medical conditions, anesthetize animals as needed, and perform surgery. Recognition and documentation of animal cruelty, including expert witness testimony. Must be willing to work with a wide variety of species, focusing on cats and dogs. Advise on placement and euthanasia decisions. Work with the medical director to ensure health of the population, oversight and training of medical staff (veterinary technicians and assistants).

This position is based within the medical department at a specific AC&C location but flexibility to work at other locations may occasionally be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Disease identification and surveillance, including daily rounds
  • Triage and examination of a variety of species
  • Efficiently stabilize and manage a variety of trauma cases, including vehicular traumas, high-rise traumas, etc
  • Recognize, manage and treat a wide variety of medical conditions, with a particular focus on infectious diseases
  • Direct veterinary technicians and assistants in the daily performance of their duties
  • Oversee controlled substances use and logging with the assistance of the medical clerk (where applicable)
  • Administration and monitoring of anesthesia
  • Performance of routine surgery, focusing on high-volume high-quality spay/neuter
  • Collect appropriate samples and perform and/or request appropriate laboratory tests, including decapitation for rabies testing
  • Interpretation of laboratory data and radiographs
  • Assist in placement and euthanasia decisions
  • Properly record all drug activity, DEA logs, and statistics, as required by law and AC&C policy
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including computer data entry
  • Recognition and documentation of cruelty cases, including preparation of veterinary statements and expert witness testimony
  • Necropsy examinations of deceased animals
  • Work with the medical director to ensure compliance with relevant state law and city code

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • DVM, VMD, or equivalent degree
  • Licensure in NYS to practice veterinary medicine
  • Previous clinical experience, particularly in shelters, preferred but not required

  • Interest in and understanding of shelter medicine, epidemiology, and herd health

Licensed Veterinary Technician - Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island
DEFINITION

Under the direction of a veterinarian, assist in the provision of medical and surgical care of animals in the shelter. Administers medications, assists with surgery, performs basic laboratory tests, performs euthanasia. Works well independently but as part of a team to ensure timely, quality medical care for all animals in the shelter.

This position is based within the medical department at a specific AC&C location but flexibility to work at other locations may occasionally be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Handle, restrain and triage all animals entering shelter.
  • Medicate orally, SQ and IM as directed by the staff veterinarian.
  • Prepare animals for and assist in surgery.
  • Administration and monitoring of anesthesia.
  • Collect appropriate samples and perform basic laboratory tests, including decapitation for rabies testing.
  • Implantation of microchips.
  • Take and develop radiographs.
  • Perform Euthanasia.
  • Properly record all drug activity, DEA logs, and statistics, as required by law and AC&C policy.
  • Maintain accurate and complete medical records, including computer data entry.
  • Assist in the documentation of cruelty cases.
  • Assist in performance of necropsy, as needed.
  • Cleaning of medical areas, kennels and cages as needed.

  • Aging, sexing, and accurate breed identification.
  • Other job duties as assigned by the lead veterinary technician or veterinarian.

Customer Care Supervisor
DEFINITION

This mid-level managerial position is responsible for the overall supervision and oversight of the Customer Care Department, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures concerning animal intake, placement and care, as well as deliveirng excellent customer service.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide daily supervision of Customer Care staff and volunteers assigned to customer service.
  • Oversee front office financial transactions, including cash handling and daily closing procedures.
  • Order and maintain appropriate inventory of office supplies.
  • Review all customer service reports, including but not limited to holding reports, ensuring potential owners are identified and contacted within 24 hours.
  • Ensures Customer Care staff are providing excellent customer service, both in person and on the phone.
  • Conduct regular transactional audtis and daily performance reviews of Customer Care staff and provide feedback and training on compliance with assigned tasks.
  • Generate the at-risk list to New Hope partners when assigned by Shelter Manager.
  • Develop and maintain Customer Care Staff daily work schedules and leave requests.
  • Review time and attendance database and complete staff payroll.
  • Establish, monitor, and measure staff performance goals and provide performance.
  • Particiapte in Customer Service staff hiring, evaluations, and disciplinary action in cooperation with Shelter Manager.
  • Plan, conduct, document and reinforce staff training as related to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Proactively provide problem resolution for staff, customers and volunteers.
  • Work cooperatively with other Shelter Management staff as it relates to the daily operation of the shelter.
  • In absence of Shelter Manager, assume all operational responsibilities in managing the animal Care Center.
  • Other duties as assigned by Shelter Manager or Executive Management.

QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • High School diploma required, College degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years maangement/supervisory experience, or suitable related experience in the area of customer service to the public.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, in a clear, accurate and concise manner.
  • Must know how to read and write English; bilingual is a plus.
  • Basic working knowledge of animal shelter policies and applicable laws/regulations preferred.
  • Computer literacy in Office Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Animal computer software experience preferred.
  • Reliability, high level of integrity, professionalism and punctuality.
  • Valid and current NYS Driver's License.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Kennel Supervisor - Brooklyn
DEFINITION

This is a mid-level managerial position responsible for overseeing all Animal Care Officers assigned to the kennels and other wards. Responsible for the care of all animals at AC&C. Must possess excellent customer service and leadership skills.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide daily supervision of staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain facility inventory and order supplies.
  • Perform due out processes, including the generation of appropriate reports.
  • Manage shelter inventory and population, account for all animals daily.
  • Perform center closing procedures.
  • Generate a pre-Euthanasia report to New Hope partners.
  • Monitor, prepare and submit payroll to center supervisor for review.
  • Plan, conduct, document and reinforce training.
  • Secure supplies.
  • Prepare employee schedules.
  • Assure all animals are cared for, fed, walked and cages are cleaned.
  • Identify animals that exhibit illness or injury.
  • Provide problem resolution for both staff and customers.
  • Work cooperatively with and supervise AC&C volunteers and partners.

Part-Time (24 hours per week) Canine Enrichment Facilitator

DEFINITION

Provide behavioral enrichment to dogs in the assigned AC&C Care Center. This includes walking and exercise, providing behavioral enrichment and stimulation and basic training to teach manners. The goal is to provide exercise and stimulation to keep our dogs healthy and happy and to make them more adoptable.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Exercise dogs in our building through walking, play and the use of toys.
  • Work with the SAFER Assessors to ensure dogs are walked prior to their assessment.
  • Provide toys, bedding and other enrichment supplies for dogs in the kennel as appropriate.
  • Implement an enrichment plan for dogs in the building, as appropriate. In conjunction with the enrichment plan, teach basic manners during exercise and in the kennel, as appropriate.
  • Keep accurate written and computer records to identify what was done each day for each animal. Update computer records and kennel cards as new information becomes available.
  • Work with all AC&C staff to identify medical, care, and placement needs for the animals. THis includes medical, grooming, and behavioral issues identified while providing enrichment.
  • Work with dog walking and enrichment volunteers to help train and assist.
  • Work with the Placement Supervisor to develop, maintain and support a program that provides behavioral enrichment, exercise and care for the dogs at AC&C. This includes writing and implementing protocols and procedures, ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment, and record keeping.
  • Clean up after dogs. This includes picking up after the dog during a walk, and spot and full cleaning of kennels, as needed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

Must have a genuine love and respect for animals and their welfare. Must be able to handle/lift all types of dogs with multiple behaviors and energy levels.

  • Must have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with animals and dog behavior a plus, but must be willing to learn.
  • Position requires an individual who is able to physically walk distances.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Must be able to work in an animal shelter with a positive and motivational attitude. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to odors or airborne particles, including animal fur and toxic chemicals. Part-Time Canine Behavior Assistant - Brooklyn

DEFINITION
Assists with SAFER (behavior) assessment of dogs in the care of Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C).

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with performance of SAFER assessments in accordance with SAFER guidelines.
  • Convey SAFER results and incorporate findings into AC&C behavior rating system accurately and legibly.
  • Assist with communication regarding any animals that may be of concern or danger to staff and the general public.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines to minimize incidents of bite, which includes determining if an assessment is not possible due to safety concerns.
  • Work cooperatively with AC&C volunteers and partners.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous experience performing behavior evaluations in a shelter or veterinary setting.
  • One year of animal sheltering experience, including animal handling within a shelter.
  • Knowledge of canine body language and behavior.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word, comfortable learning new computer systems and operating video taping equipment.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid and current NYS Driver's License.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Must be able to handle canines of all breeds and sizes. The Behavior Evaluator must be able to handle animals of various temperaments in a calm, non-threatening manner. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to odors or airborne particles including animal fur and toxic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is very loud. Frequent driving between facilities is required. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

REPORTS TO: Placement Supervisor and Shelter Supervisor.

OVERTIME: This position is eligible for overtime.

  • Good oral written communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of breeds and their association with specific behaviors.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License.

Animal Control Officer (2 positions available)

DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Director of Field Operations, provide animal control and rescue through field assignments. Respond to calls in the field, drive vehicle safely throughout the five boroughs or other areas, transporting and impounding animals, and educte the public on animal related issues as part of field call.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Handle various species of animals humanely.
  • Respond to field calls/transport requests in order of priority.
  • Clean/disinfect vehicles, cages, equipment.
  • Conduct intake of animals in shelter computer system.
  • Communicate AC&C policies/procedures to public and other agencies.
  • Complete necessary written reports concisely and timely.
  • Initiate animal cruelty investigations, as needed.
  • Respond to disaster related calls.
  • Work cooperatively with AC&C volunteers and partners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possess and maintain a valid NYS Drivers License in good standing./li>
  • Good verbal/written communication skills and basic computer skills.
  • High School diploma.
  • One year of satisfactory work experience handling animals and/or driving in a metropolitan area.
  • Ability to use GPS, read maps, prioritize field calls.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to capture and restrain animals ranging in weight greater than 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to handle animals of various species, including but not limited to reptiles, birds, rabbits, and primates.
  • Must be able to work on-call after hours.

Animal Care Officer  - Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island Shelters

DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Shelter Supervisors, provide animal care and ensure the welfare of animals at the AC&C shelters. Create a happy and healthy environment for both animals and AC&C's internal and external customers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide basic animal care and welfare, including food, water, bedding and toys
  • Thoroughly clean and properly sanitize cages and areas of shelter as assigned, according to AC&C policy and procedure
  • Walk and interact with animals on a regular basis
  • Observe behavior, illness and any injury of an animal
  • Restrain animals for exams and euthanasia
  • Secure aggressive animals, as needed
  • As directed by medical staff or supervisor, provide pre-surgery care and preparation to animals
  • Conduct lost and found tours with members of the public
  • Work cooperatively with AC&C volunteers and partners
  • Perform other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum one year of animal care experience
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Valid and current NYS Driver's License preferred
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Love of animals and ability to interact with them in a calm, non-threatening manner
  • Reliability, high level of integrity and punctuality are essential
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment and follow directions
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Ability to work in an animal care facility where euthanasia is performed. Ability to remain calm and assertive in stressful situations.
