Animal Care Officer-Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island

SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the care and welfare of animals while they are in the care of AC&C, as well as providing customer service.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Keep cages and runs clean and sanitized

  • Provide food and water for the animals
  • Be aware of animals who may exhibit signs of illness or injury
  • Assist with securing of supplies
  • Answer telephones in a professional manner
  • Assist customers within scope of duties, including with intakes and adoptions
  • Prioritize situations, as needed
  • Perform Due Out Processes, including the generation of appropriate reports, making rounds, evaluating animals for adoptability and updating the computer system
  • Generate a Pre-Euthanasia Report to New Hope Partners
  • Perform all adoption paperwork and procedures
  • Print kennel inventory and account for all animals
  • Accurately perform Lost and Found Checks and Return to Owner procedures
  • Monitor, prepare and submit payroll to Center Supervisor for review
  • Perform Center closing procedures
  • Secure aggressive animals as needed
  • Any additional duties at the direction of a supervisor

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • True love of animals and ability to interact with them in a calm and non-threatening manner
  • Demonstrated reliability and a high level of integrity

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • No prior knowledge of duties is required

ABILITY TO:

  • Professionally interact with the public and to assist them within the scope of duties
  • Handle a wide variety of cats, dogs and exotic animals
  • Perform quality work
  • Deal effectively with volunteers and other employees
  • Lift heavy loads up to 125 lbs. (animals, food bags, etc.)
  • Learn shelter computer software programs

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to work in an animal care facility where euthanasia is performed

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTY:

Supervision of subordinates is not generally associated with this position.

REPORTS TO:

The Care Center Manager

SALARY RANGE:

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a salary as per Union scale. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, sick time, vacation time and 401K. Union membership is required.

Veterinary Technician - Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island

SUMMARY:
This position is within the medical unit located at our Staten Island facility, assisting in providing services to our animals and in assisting our Veterinarians with the performance of their duties.   

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

    • Examine, vaccinate and triage animals
    • Medicate and treat animals
    • Perform humane euthanasia
    • Assist with surgery
    • Asepsis
    • Computer data entry
    • Aging and sexing of animals
    • Disease recognition and management
    • Breed identification and characteristics
    • Other duties, as assigned and directed by the Veterinarian or Lead Veterinary Technician Supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • True love of animals and ability to interact with them in a calm and non-threatening manner
  • Prior veterinary technician experience; Shelter environment is a plus
  • High level of reliability and a commitment to our mission and values

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  1. Basic veterinary technician protocols and procedures
  2. Computers and common programs, such as MS Office

Veterinarian - Visit All Centers


POSITION: Veterinarian                                                        LOCATION: Visit All Centers
OPENING DATE: December 6, 2008                                  CLOSING DATE: Open until filled

SUMMARY:
This is a professional-level position responsible for the medical treatment of animals

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Evaluate the health and vital statistics of animals within New York City animal shelter facilities
  • Perform surgical procedures on animals, with a strong emphasis on spay/neuter
  • Monitor and administer anesthesia to animals
  • Monitor the recovery of animals
  • Perform post surgical evaluation and treatment
  • Train clinic and shelter staff in animal medical procedures and protocols
  • Supervise the release of animals from rabies quarantine
  • Supervise the administration of humane euthanasia techniques
  • Provides medical treatment as needed
  • Perform computer data entry and retrieval as needed
  • Monitors controlled drug log and records
  • Other duties as assigned and directed by the Executive Director

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong surgical skills, particularly in performing spay/neuter techniques
  • Graduation from a recognized veterinarian school with a DVM or VDM degree
  • Must have a current NYS Veterinary License

ABILITY TO:

  • Work in either an animal shelter or in a mobile medical unit
  • Perform quality medical care in a shelter environment
  • Lift large animals, bend, and to perform all the requirements of the position
  • Perform the preparation and administration of humane tranquilizers and humane euthanasia solutions

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to work in an animal care facility where humane euthanasia is performed

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTY:
This position does not generally encompass the supervision of others, with the exception of medical supervision of veterinarian technicians, veterinary assistants, & medical clerks.

BEHAVIOR EVALUATOR - Manhattan Care Center

OPEN:          4-9-08                                       CLOSED:        Open Until Filled   

 

SUMMARY:

This is an exempt-level position relating to, and providing, behavioral evaluations of animals at AC&C. 

Although the primary location for this position will be at the Brooklyn  Care Center, time will also be spent, as needed, at the other Care Centers weekly .

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Perform behavioral evaluations on animals
  • Assist with program evaluation and modifications, as needed.
  • Work closely with center supervisors to ensure that collected evaluation data is easily available and is used appropriately
  • Ensure compliance with the goal of having more than 85% of the dogs in the care of AC&C tested
  • Other duties and assignments as deemed appropriate

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive knowledge of animal behavior testing and evaluation with 3-years experience in the animal behavior field plus exceptional animal handling abilities
  • 2-years experience in animal sheltering preferred
  • Experience with the SAFER System is a plus
  • High School graduate; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Possession of good customer service and “people” skills

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Ability to work in an animal care facility where euthanasia is performed.
 
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTY:

Occasional supervision of other staff and/or evaluation assistants, as necessary

 

REPORTS TO:

The Care Center Supervisor

SALARY:

This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting annual salary of $34,000 plus medical, dental and vision insurance, sick leave, annual leave and 401K.

Transporter - Bronx/Queens

POSITION: Transporter                                             LOCATION:  Bronx/Queens

OPENING DATE:  May 30, 2008                               CLOSING DATE: Until Filled

SUMMARY:
This position is primarily responsible for transporting animals, safe and secure, from the Bronx and Queens Pet Receiving Centers to their designated shelter facility.  In addition, respond to local animal rescue calls, as needed, if requested by the Executive Director, Director of Administrative Services, Field Ops Supervisor, or as other wise assigned.        

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Pick up assigned vehicle from the Center it is housed at
  • Inspect the vehicle and indicate any problems, including damage, on a Trip Ticket prior to going on the road 
  • Ensure the vehicle is clean which includes the exterior, cages, and cabin 
  • Ensure the vehicle’s Emergency Station is fully equipped
  • Pick up and deliver donated items to the designated location 
  • Transport internal mail and/or packages to all AC&C locations 
  • Cage cleaning and maintenance of housed animals
  • Light porter duties
  • Animal handling as needed 
  • Educate the public concerning responsible pet ownership
  • Customer Service in person and via telephone
  • Process Intake forms, Trip Tickets, and other paperwork in an accurate, concise and proper timely manner
  • Maintain proper communication contact via radio with Supervisors
  • Any additional duties at the direction of a supervisor

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or GED
  • True love of animals and ability to interact with them in a calm and non-threatening manner
  • Demonstrated reliability and a high level of integrity
  • Minimum age requirement-twenty-one.
  • MUST have at least one years driving experience and be in possession of a valid NYS Driver’s License with a clean record
  • Needs to have familiarity with New York City neighborhoods and streets
  • Must have some animal handling experience

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • New York City areas
  • Animal handling experience

 

ABILITY TO:

  • Professionally interact with the public and assist them within the scope of duties
  • Perform quality work with minimal supervision
  • Deal with strange and sometimes aggressive animals 
  • Travel to unfamiliar neighborhoods
  • Handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner
  • Lift heavy loads (animals, food bags, etc.)
  • Basic familiarity with computers, MS Word and MS Outlook

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Ability to work in an animal care facility where euthanasia is performed as well as in unfamiliar neighborhoods and surroundings

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILTY:
Supervision of subordinates is not generally associated with this position.

Bronx/Queens Coordinator & the Manhattan & Brooklyn Care Center Supervisors  

SALARY RANGE:
This is a full-time, exempt position with a starting salary of $10.00 per hour. Benefits include health, vision and dental insurance, vacation and sick leave and 401K.  UNION membership is required.

Business Office Coordinator - staten Island Care Center


POSITION: Business Office Coordinator         LOCATION:  Staten Island Care Center

THIS IS A NON-UNION, EXEMPT POSITION

SUMMARY:
This position’s responsibility is to assist the Care Center Supervisor with daily administrative duties as needed. 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Responsible for cash management which includes end of shift closing, change fund distribution, and cash reconciliation.

  • Ensure financial integrity and accuracy by conducting regular audits and daily employee activity reviews.
  • Plan, conduct, document and reinforce training
  • Conduct customer service checks and accurately document transactions and possible discrepancies.
  • Responsible for General and Supervisor’s voicemail.  Responsible for New Hope Department voicemail when no New Hope staff is available.
  • Act as recording secretary at management meetings and ensure relevant information is disseminated.
  • Accurately complete and submit C2s and Incident reports to Human Resources.
  • Maintain accurate employee rabies vaccination information on file.
  • Post Employee Leave Balance; review employee leave requests.
  • Maintain attendance and payroll records
  • Ensure that customers are handled in an orderly fashion.
  • Maintain Employee and Volunteer bulletin boards.
  • Provide problem resolution for staff, volunteers, and customers.
  • Assist Care Center Manager in interviewing employment candidates.
  • Responsible for Business office supplies, orders, and retail store.
  • Responsible to ensure the integrity of kennel inventory.
  • Handle additional duties as assigned and deemed appropriate by the Care Center Manager.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be able to demonstrate a minimum of two years management experience or suitable related experience, as well as experience in customer service.
  • Animal sheltering experience is preferred.
  • High School or GED; Associates degree preferred.
  1. Ability to manage high work volume and to prioritize.
  2. Computers and common programs, such as MS Office; Knowledge of Chameleon and Excel a plus

ABILITY TO:

  • Communicate, both verbally and in writing, in a clear, accurate and concise manner.
  • Provide guidance, direction and resolution for staffing issues and problems.
  • Supervise a diverse staff, in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Resolve problems in a calm manner with customers and to provide outstanding customer service
  • Accurately manage cash flow and to conduct appropriate oversight and audit functions to ensure financial integrity
  • Handle animal care functions within a shelter environment
  • Interview and select professionally capable staff
  • Lift loads up to 25 lbs., including animals and supplies

REPORTS TO:
The Care Center Supervisor.

SALARY RANGE:
This is a full-time, exempt position, with Competitive salary, plus benefits, including medical, dental, vision insurance, sick leave, annual leave and 401K. Union membership is NOT required for this position.
