REDUCE STRESS CAUSED BY ECONOMIC FEARS – ADOPT A PET FROM
ANIMAL CARE & CONTROL OF NEW YORK CITY

Adoption from AC&C is the Most Cost Effective Way of Finding a Companion

New York, NY – October 15, 2008 – Studies show that owning a pet reduces stress and improves your mood, something many of us could benefit from after the last two weeks of financial troubles on Wall Street. Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C), the organization responsible for rescuing over 43,000 animals off the streets of New York City each year, offers the most cost effective way to adopt an animal. Cat and dog adoption fees start as low as $25. This fee includes a complimentary visit with a participating veterinarian.

Richard Gentles, Director of Administration Services for AC&C, says they are finding that “the decline in the economy is starting to affect us all. Fewer people are adopting animals and more people are turning them in to shelters.” However, Gentles states that “with the increased stress put on individuals and families as a result of today’s economy, now, more than ever is the perfect time to adopt a pet.”

During the summer months, AC&C takes in over 100 cats per day, or 3,000 per month. This fall, the birth rates are not showing any sign of slowing down. To help these cats and kittens find permanent homes, Animal Care & Control, along with more than a dozen other local animal shelters and rescue groups, will take part in “Adopt-A-Cat at The Garden”, October 18th from 10am to 6pm and October 19th from 10am to 5pm. Over 500 cats and kittens in desperate need of new homes will be available for adoption.

Individuals who want to help needy animals but are struggling with their finances will feel better knowing that they will receive a care package of goodies for their adopted friend. In addition, AC&C’s Safety Net Program helps prevent animals from being surrendered to NYC shelters by offering lower cost veterinarian care for those on restricted incomes, low cost behavioral training and advice for animals, and temporary pet boarding and foster homes during crises.

Animal Care & Control has adoption events every weekend in each of the five boroughs, and there are always adoptable animals looking for a permanent home in the shelters. For more information on the animals currently available for adoption at all three AC&C care centers, and for adoption event locations, visit www.nycacc.org.

About Animal Care & Control of New York City: AC&C rescues over 43,000 animals each year, making the organization the largest pet rescue and adoption agency in the North East. Since 1995, the not-for-profit organization has been responsible for New York City’s municipal shelter system, caring for rescued animals and finding loving homes for homeless, injured, neglected, abused and abandoned animals in all five boroughs of New York City. AC&C takes in all homeless pets, including the over 120 new animals on the streets every day. Animals are given shelter, vaccinated, medically evaluated, housed, and fed until they are reunited with their owners or adopted. AC&C has implemented numerous programs to ensure that as many animals as possible are placed in loving and supporting homes.
